The score bench operator is an important official in the sport of basketball. In many local competitions throughout Australia, parents and participants who may not have the correct accreditation are the ones operating the score bench throughout matches. This is perfectly fine, provided the operators are impartial, alert and concentrated on the game, accurate, fair and courteous.
However, in state, national and international matches in championships and official leagues, the score bench operator must be accredited and registered (where needed). With a pathway for technical officials from the WABL, NBL1, WNBL, NBL and National Championships, aspiring score bench operators have access to training and education in Western Australia thanks to Basketball WA.
