Last weekend was the First Nations Round across the NBL1, and we were incredibly lucky to welcome special guest Dr Richard Walley and his family to join us at our home game on Sunday.
Dr Walley did the design for our spectacular First Nations uniforms, and the story behind the design was just as impressive as the design itself, pictured below. The design was also worn by support staff as pictured below.
“The 8 small arches on the outer sections of the circles represent the people, including the coaches, support and management crew, spectators and community.
Moving in, the six circles represent the Nyoongar Six Seasons and being on Nyoongar Country.
The three inner circles are past, present, and future. This is the history of the club; where they are today, and where they are heading in the future.
Moving in again, the two outer circles are the two teams. The one circle in the centre represents the one game,
There are boomerangs (kylee). These represent offence and defence, as the kylee is an offensive and defensive tool and weapon.
The design represents standing on Nyoongar Country, and the competitive and community driven nature of the sport.
The values of the game draw parallels to the way of the Nyoongar Country, a place where the good of the collective takes precedence over the good of the individual.”

Dr Richard Walley was joined by his son Alton Walley, and Nathan Hansen, father of NBL1 Womens player Talicia Hansen, to perform the Welcome to Country at yesterday’s home game.
A truly inspiring and engaging performance including Dr Walley on the didgeridoo, and traditional dance by Alton and Nathan.
For those who were unable to attend on Sunday, you can find some images below of the proceedings.
Thank you again to the Walley and Hansen family for Welcoming us, and educating our community on the rich First Nations culture.
This round is a positive first step to creating genuine pathways and opportunities for Indigenous players, and recognising the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players have made, and continue to make to our game.
