Ahead of First Nations Round, Willetton Basketball Association would like to celebrate the incredible initiative of the Roadies Basketball Club in creating their inaugral Roadies Indigenous Singlet.
The design is a result of a magnificent collaboration between Junior Roadies player Scarlett Yarran, and renowned Indigenous artist Peter Farmer Jr, who has previously designed Indigenous jerseys for the Fremantle Dockers Football Club.
The design began with Scarlett’s drawings (pictured below), and with this, Peter Farmer Jr was able to create the final design that beautifully represents the story of Scarlett’s family bonds, as well as the meaningful connections that she has forged in basketball.
Peter Farmer Jr has provided the story behind the final design elements on the singlet;
The dingo tracks are Scarlett’s dad. The dingo is Scarlett’s dad’s totem, and he is always in her heart.
The star symbols are the players; five at the front (on the court) and 3 at the back (interchange).
The artwork features journey lines (Biddi’s) that each individual, and team, travel together.
The three lines are prominent features in all parts, with the home and away jersey colours.
There are three of the Noongar symbols for meeting or gathering places on the front and back.
This represents a strong sense of community and culture, and those that have gone who continue to guide us.
The singlet will be hitting courts for NAIDOC week, where Scarlett’s team and others will proudly wear not just the singlet, but the narrative that it tells.
The Roadies Indigenous singlet will also make a very special appearance at half time of the NBL1 First Nations Round game this Saturday night.
Once again we congratulate Scarlett on her beautiful contribution to the design, Peter Farmer Jr for offering his incredible talent to help bring Scarlett’s story to life, and Roadies Basketball Club for facilitating this wonderful initiative.
